Safety Principles & Strategy

“There is only one acceptable number of incidents that threaten the health and safety of the WDG Construction Group’s employees and the subcontractors that we rely on. That number is ZERO!”

- Mike Wyman, President
Project Safety Principles
Our principles are simple. Zero tolerance. The safety of our employees, our subcontractors, and all personnel involved with each project is our number one priority.

The overall goals for the division are to achieve an OSHA recordable rate of less than one, a lost time accident rate of zero, and a lost workday rate of zero.

These safety goals can be achieved by creating a safe work place for the workers through the development and implementation of a strategy that incorporates proactive planning, well defined procedures, and a system for acknowledging safe practices.

Safety Strategy
The key to a successful safety program is implementing a strategy that addresses a proactive approach to safety and eliminating injuries.

The plan will incorporate four specific areas that will provide proactive training, specific jobsite safety programs, promotion of safety and monitoring, and reporting lessons learned to provide a system that will continually strive to improve upon itself. To realize the benefits of the Safety Plan, the entire project workforce must be truly committed to safety. A program will be put in place that provides incentives and stresses accountability to enhance commitment.
WDG Safety Keys to Success
Training
Training will be targeted in three ways: yearly or bi-yearly OSHA training, quarterly safety indicator training and weekly topic-specific safety meeting (Tool Box Safety Meetings). Each type of training will provide a different level of instruction. Management safety certification is designed to allow WDG Construction Group to manage the safety program while weekly subcontractor topical meetings are intended to educate the workforce on safe practices. In addition, it is the policy of WDG Construction Group that all personnel will be CPR Certified.

Monitoring of training shall include both certification and selected subject training indicators. Training for WDG Construction Group employees shall be monitored to ensure that certifications are kept up to date and selected quarterly/weekly topics are diverse to provide a well-rounded wealth of knowledge.

Planning
In preparation for each project, a specific jobsite safety program shall be prepared. The jobsite program shall be based on the standard approved WDG Construction Group, Inc. format and customized to meet the specific needs of the project. It shall include specifics for the responsible persons on the project, safety meetings, provisions for inspections, hazardous operations, MSDS sheets, training, accident reporting, preplanning for safety and a specific location where the plan will be maintained on site.

The program shall be distributed to the subcontractors associated with the project to acknowledge their intent to enforce the WDG Construction Group Project Specific Safety Policy. WDG Construction Group includes within each project, a site specific Safety Plan.

Promotion
A good program not only provides training and oversight, but a way to instill a sense of ownership of the program by the people who are expected to live it everyday. This can be accomplished by the promotion of the program itself to remind workers that safety must be the first thing considered before starting an activity.

Learning
Monitoring daily work activities is an essential element which is critical to the success of any safety plan. Documenting and monitoring incidents and near misses will allow for the continual improvement of workplace safety by identifying areas that require improvement through proactive means.
